A conceptual framework for dynamic control of daylighting and electric lighting systems
As an initial step toward establishing a comprehensive research program on building automization, a conceptual framework for a dynamic and integrative control of daylighting and electric lighting systems for commercial buildings is presented. The integrative control of architectural systems creates opportunities to reduce energy consumption in buil....

Simulated control of a tracking mobile robot by four aVLSI integrate-and-fire neurons paired into maps
A simulated four-wheeled robot is controlled exclusively by four aVLSI integrate-and-fire neurons paired into winner-takes-all maps. The neural network takes analog sensor data as input and outputs to stepper motors controlling steering and throttle. The robot follows a randomly moving target in a closed environment 67 % better than by chance, base....

Time averaging equivalent circuit analysis for a class of periodically switching linear network
A unified approach, i.e. the time-averaging equivalent circuit analysis, is proposed for a class of periodically switching linear networks. The distinctive feature of the approach is to replace the pulsewidth modulated switches inside the original network prior to any further treatment, yielding a structure-invariant linear circuit, which can thus ....

A mu -vector LMS adaptive system for enhancing nonstationary narrow-band signal
The performance of a least-mean square (LMS) adaptive filter with respect to the feedback factor mu in both stationary and nonstationary environments are outlined and investigated by simulations. A mu -vector LMS algorithm that is an extension of the conventional LMS algorithm is proposed. In the proposed algorithm, different values of feedback fac....

Space solar cell performance for advanced GaAs and Si solar cells
The relative performances of the panel components of space power systems that incorporate advanced GaAs and Si cells in both rigid and flexible (including advanced photovoltaic array) configurations are analyzed. Realistic assumptions about the panel components are made. Various performance parameters are calculated. The required beginning-of-life ....

Multipath sensitivity and carrier slip tolerance of an integrated Doppler DGPS navigation algorithm
Integrated Doppler techniques are potentially very useful for such critical real-time DGPS (differential Global Positioning System) applications as river and harbor ship steering, aircraft precision approach, and autonomous land vehicle guidance. Offering high measurement precision and reduced sensitivity to multipath, the integrated Doppler observ....

Suboptimal robust sinusoidal frequency estimation
It has been shown that an L/sub p/ normed solution to linear prediction equations may be advantageous in certain time-series modeling applications. Specifically, in the context of sinusoidal frequency estimation from data contaminated by impulsive noise, choosing p=1 may result in less biased frequency estimates. Computing L/sub p/ normed solutions....

Sinusoidal frequency estimation by approximate MUSIC method
Two efficient methods avoiding eigenvector computation are proposed for approximating the signal subspace in terms of the Fourier transform. The resulting approximations are used to substitute for the signal eigenvectors in MUSIC. The proposed methods perform almost the same as MUSIC at high SNRs and provide often clearly better results at low SNRs....
